Why Most STEM Professionals Struggle to "Stand Out" & Get Hired In the May Job Market

Why Most STEM Professionals Struggle to "Stand Out" & Get Hired In the May Job Market

Simply Graduating with a STEM degree doesn’t guarantee a job. The truth is, employers don’t hire based on degrees—they hire based on what you can DO. Without real-world experience or a portfolio, it’s almost impossible to stand out.

Any of these sound familiar?

  • I’ve learned the theory but don’t know how to apply it.

  • I feel stuck because I lack experience and a portfolio to show employers.

  • I want to make a career move, but I’m overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.

"According to a study by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), 48% of engineering graduates feel 'not prepared at all' in critical thinking, and 29% feel unprepared in project management—key skills employers demand."

Our Residency aims to bridge the gap between what's taught in engineering school, and what's necessary to be an industry professional — equipped with the tools to solve problems, think critically, and handle whatever challenges are thrown your way.

The Costliest Career Mistakes—and How to Avoid Them

What I’d Do Differently If I Were Starting My Future Tech Career Today

Breaking into future tech fields is challenging, and there are a few mistakes that can derail your progress.

Mistake #1: The first is doing nothing—waiting for the perfect moment instead of taking action. Do nothing, get nothing. This is just wasting time — mostly your own. Try stuff. See what happens. You might surprise yourself!

Mistake #2: Another is relying on certificates or grades alone, thinking they’ll impress employers. Without hands-on experience or a portfolio to back them up, certificates often fall short. It’s one thing to Ace a test. It’s another thing to fix a robot that’s leaking boron all over the factory floor… (story for another time).

Mistake #3: Then there’s the “DIY trap”—trying to teach yourself coding, robotics, and automation without guidance. This approach costs far more in lost time, frustration, and missed opportunities than most realize. This is because, as Rumsfeld said in 2002, there are “unknown, unknowns” — you don’t know what you don’t know!

The truth is, that employers care about what you can do, not just what you’ve learned.

That’s why our residency is designed to help you skip these mistakes by focusing on real-world projects, presentation skills, and building a professional portfolio that gets you hired.

Keep reading to see exactly how our program gives you the skills, confidence, and tools to land a $100,000+ role in future tech.

From Career Fair Failure to Earning $50,000 at 20—How I Built a Proven Framework to Get Hired in Future-Tech by Top Companies Like Raytheon, Amazon, & Pratt & Whitney

I Didn’t Know It at the Time, But 13 years ago, I Was Building a Framework That Would Change My Career Forever

Hi, I’m Liz. I’m the Robotics Engineer behind this Engineering Residency, and I know what it feels like to work hard, earn degrees, yet still feel stuck.

That’s why I created a framework designed to help you stand out, get hired, and build a career you’re proud of. That framework is baked into my Engineering Residency.

The story begins nearly 13 years ago with…

…My First Career Fair Failure.

When I started studying robotics engineering at WPI, I thought I had it all figured out. I was a straight-A student, acing every exam, and felt confident my academic success would speak for itself.

But then I attended my first career fair that fall. I walked in feeling unstoppable—and walked out feeling completely defeated.

Graduation Day from WPI. And crazily, my 10 year reunion is this year.

At every booth, it became painfully clear: I didn’t know how to introduce myself, explain my skills, or have a meaningful conversation with recruiters.

I left without a single interview, wondering why all my hard work wasn’t paying off.

That day was my brutal wake-up call.

Employers didn’t care about my grades—they cared about what I could do. But at the time, I didn’t have any projects, experience, or a way to stand out.

Something had to change.

I didn’t want to be one of the many engineers who spend over $100,000+ on their engineering degree, only to end up waiting tables or settling for a minimum wage job, paying off student loans until I was 80.

That sounded like a horrible life, so as any engineer would do, I began testing different solutions.

My Career Breakthrough Came By Accident

Determined to do better, I decided to take action, starting with my first hands-on project. I practiced presenting it, even though I didn’t know exactly what I was doing.

That spring, I applied to the highly competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at UPenn’s GRASP Lab—one of the top robotics research labs in the country.

Out of hundreds of applicants, only 8 were accepted nationwide… and I was one of them.

I ended up working in Dr. Vijay Kumar’s drone lab. That same summer, he ended up getting called to the White House to work in the Obama Administration and was put on a sabbatical from UPenn.

We ran into each other many years later when I was at Pratt, but that’s a story for another time.

Regardless of your political leanings, you could say my Second Connection is President Barack Obama, which makes my Third Connection, President Donald Trump. CRAZY, amiright?!

This was my first taste of what having tangible projects and a clear story could do. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked.

Looking back now, I can see that this was the beginning of the framework that would shape my career.

Here's a photo of me with my colleagues from one of our UPenn presentation days. I'm wearing pink and holding the drone.

It Wasn’t Luck. I Just Executed a Better Strategy… That Worked.

By the fall of my sophomore year, I’d started to refine my approach. I walked into the next career fair with a portfolio of projects and a clear introduction. While I didn’t land an opportunity immediately, I had meaningful conversations with recruiters for the first time.

I could see things starting to shift. I was learning what employers actually wanted to see: real-world problem-solving, the ability to articulate your value, and confidence in your skills.

This is me presenting my research at UPenn. This demo is what inspired me to add presentations to this residency so that you can practice too.

I Landed the Coolest Jobs… One was teaching Robotics at MIT…

The mecca of engineering is MIT, so when I got the call to teach robotics over the summer there, this was a huge turning point for me.

Not only did it validate the progress I’d made, but it also gave me the chance to teach robotics to others—a role I found incredibly rewarding. This experience taught me how to simplify complex concepts and make them accessible, a skill I still use today in this residency.

But It wasn’t All Sunshine And Rainbows…

I still had another career fair to get through plus the unsettled feelings from the dozens of rejections years prior.

By the fall of my junior year, I’d fully developed and refined my framework—though I didn’t even realize it at the time.

I returned to the same career fair where I’d failed as a freshman, but this time, everything was different. Armed with a polished portfolio, a confident introduction, and a clear understanding of how to showcase my work, I struck up a conversation with a senior engineering leader from Pratt & Whitney.

We talked about my projects for 30 minutes—an eternity at a career fair—and that single conversation led to an 8-month co-op testing commercial engines for the A320neo.

That co-op paid me nearly $50,000 when I was just 20 years old. And here’s the kicker: I still didn’t technically have a degree.

What I did have was a portfolio of real-world projects, the ability to articulate my value, and the confidence to present myself as someone who could get the job done. Those were the skills that got me noticed.

This Same Process Helped Me Get into the Operations Leadership Program at Raytheon

But, even after landing my first dream job at Raytheon, I realized something wasn’t quite right. At Raytheon, I was part of their elite Operations Leadership Program (1 of 30 globally selected).

This is me on Graduation Day from the Operations Leadership Program (OLP).

On paper, it was the perfect next step in my career—a prestigious program designed to develop future engineering leaders.

But after a few years, I felt stuck again

To push forward, I invested heavily in industry training—over $15,000 worth of technical courses and certifications. For months, I sat through training sessions and earned new credentials, hoping they would unlock the next level of my career.

But nothing seemed to change.

I wasn’t moving forward, and I wasn’t growing in my career the way I’d hoped.

That’s when I remembered my original career framework from college: just like grades don’t impress employers, certificates and training alone aren’t enough to stand out.

Employers want to see proof of what you can do—real-world projects, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate your value effectively. That’s when everything clicked: the framework I’d built in college wasn’t just for landing my first job—it was the key to long-term career success.

Real career growth came down to three things:

  1. Building real-world projects that prove your skills.

  2. Presenting them effectively to decision-makers.

  3. Communicating your value with confidence.

Looking back, I can see that this frustration was the final piece of the puzzle.

It inspired me to formalize the framework that would later become this residency—a system built to help people like you break out of that frustrating cycle and achieve real results.

Here’s the abridged version:

High-Honors at WPI with a Degree in Robotics Engineering: Graduated with top distinctions in 3.5 years — yep, I stepped on the seal. Word has it that if you step on the seal, you don't graduate in 4 years...

Raytheon Operations Leadership Program: Selected as 1 of 30 globally for a prestigious program designed to develop future engineering leaders.

Teaching Robotics at MIT: Taught summer robotics programs at MIT, where I honed the methods that later became the foundation of this residency.

CES Invitation: Invited to showcase cutting-edge robotics products for a Chinese robotics company at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Hackathon Success: Won 2nd place at an international hackathon in Israel, developing assistive technology for the visually impaired.

Renewable Energy Research in Australia: Conducted groundbreaking renewable energy research in Australia before residential solar panels became widely commercialized.

I'm demonstrating an assistive device for the visually impaired at an Israeli Hackathon. We won second place.

Each of these accomplishments was a direct result of the framework I built and refined—one that focuses on real-world projects, presenting your work effectively, and clearly communicating your value.

I’m not sharing this to brag—I’m sharing it because I’m the first proof this framework works. If I could achieve this as someone who started with no connections and no idea how to stand out, I know you can too.

This isn’t just a theory I came up with; it’s a battle-tested system that’s been refined over 13 years. Now, I’ve packaged it into a repeatable process—the TDP Methodology (Train, Do, Present)—so you can achieve similar results, no matter where you’re starting.

Here’s a drawing of how the TDP Methodology Works:

This is my TDP Methodology

Why I Built This Residency

I built this residency because I know what it’s like to feel stuck. I’ve been where you are—working hard but unsure how to make it count. This framework changed my career, and now, it’s helped thousands of others do the same.

This isn’t another boring course on theory.

If that’s what you’re looking for, we don’t cover the philosophies of engineering.

What we do focus on is the process and frameworks for solving real-time, real-world problems that arise in future tech.

Just like a “real engineer” does daily.

This is also the highly valuable “experience” component most professionals miss when trying to get engineering jobs.

Real Engineering is rarely “textbook engineering.”

My residency is designed to help you become a better thinker and a real-time problem-solver who can tackle off-the-cuff engineering challenges.

I promise if you give it your all for the 12 weeks, this will help you STAND OUT, BE UNIQUE, but most importantly, GET HIRED.

It’s a battle-tested, step-by-step system that’s been refined over 13 years and used by thousands of students to land high-paying jobs and achieve career transformations they never thought possible.

Designed for Results, Priced Competitively

Transparent Pricing. Your World-Class Experience.

Hey, Liz here again!

You might be wondering why this residency isn’t priced at $22,777, $16,500, or even $8,475 like most coding bootcamps or professional programs.

Instead, you can join for just 4 payments of $939 or $3,499 prepaid.

For that investment, you’ll get 12 weeks of immersive, project-based learning—designed by me and my team of expert engineers.

You’ll build 20+ interdisciplinary projects, master hands-on skills in coding, electronics, and 3D design, and create a standout portfolio that sets you apart in the future-tech job market.

So, why is the price so accessible?

Here’s the reason: We designed this program to deliver a high ROI—so you get real results while keeping it competitively priced.

Here's the Math:

💻 If all we did was help you earn $25/hr, you’d make your investment back in less than a month.

🚀 However, the average Robotics Engineer earns $62/hr.

💰 If you're just average, you’d recover your investment in less than 2 weeks.

The bigger your ROI with us, the happier you'll be, and the more likely you'll be to recommend us to everyone in your network.

Your success is our success.

When we first launched, this program was in-person and cost over $15,000.

After years of refinement, we’ve leveraged the power of online learning to make it more flexible, accessible, and scalable—without compromising results.

Bottom line: This program could be the most important step in your future-tech career, and we’ve intentionally priced it to deliver incredible ROI without the inflated cost of traditional programs.
